Two-time NBA championship coach Erik Spoelstra is finalizing a new multiyear contract extension with the Miami Heat according to sources with knowledge of the talks.
The deal is expected to be made public before the start of the Heat's training camp in the Bahamas this week, sources said. Before talks began Spoelstra could've been the most sought out free agent in the coaching market since Phil Jackson.
According to Yahoo! Sports, Spoelstra, 42, has a 260-134 winning record (.660) in five seasons as Miami's head coach, including three straight trips to the NBA Finals and two titles. He's 50-29 (.633) in five trips to the postseason.
Spoelstra has also forged a strong relationship with reigning league MVP LeBron James, earning his respect and becoming vital in Heat owner Micky Arison's and president Pat Riley's re-recruitment plan to keep James in South Beach.
As Spoelstra's deal gets finalized the Heat have announced that Juwan Howard has been hired to Assistant Coach/Player Development position.
Howard, a 19-year NBA veteran, will make the transition to the coaching staff after being named Assistant Coach/Player Development. He will be assisting in the areas of player development and other duties assigned by Coach Spoelstra.
