When the Cleveland Browns play on Thursday night, Brian Hoyer will be the starting quarterback for the team. The franchise is on a role after the third-string quarterback took over for the injured Brandon Weeden. He has led the team to two-straight wins, something Weeden has struggled to do. Despite Hoyer having the hot hand, Weeden is convinced he will get a chance to start once he is healthy again.
If Hoyer gets the win against the Buffalo Bills this week, there is a good chance Weeden will not see the field again this season. While the former starter is certainly happy his team is winning, he is anxious to get back on the field and contribute. While referring to himself as the "ultimate team guy", Weeden is confident he will get another chance to start once his thumb heals.
"That's my mindset," Weeden said, via Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I can't approach it any other way. If I did, I'd be doing a disservice to myself and doing a disservice to this offense. I'm going to work just as hard as I did in the off-season to win the job. I'm going to keep continuing to work just as hard now as I did week one and week two and go from there."
The 2012 draft pick certainly has not let his confidence drop since Hoyer started getting the team winning again. Weeden says he is still treating the offense like he is the leader of it. He is working hard not to get discouraged while Hoyer is the clear favorite right now with the team.
"I'd be lying if I said this was the ideal situation,'' said Weeden. "I want to be out there. You never draw it up that you're going to get hurt Week 2 and stuff like this happens. But it's life. You can't feel sorry for yourself. I'm treating it like this is still my football team, I'm still involved in the offense. I'm not discouraged."
Head coach Rob Chudzinski is keeping the quarterback situation on a week-to-week evaluation. So if Hoyer fails to win against the Browns, Weeden's chances of seeing the field certainly increase, but it appears the Browns might be preparing to move in another direction. Having already traded away Trent Richardson, the quarterback is not safe from getting the same treatment.
