The Cardinals and Pirates provided an exciting Game 3 after hooking up in one-sided affairs in the first two games of the series. The Cardinals took Game 1 as it was obvious that A.J. Burnett was not going to be around for the long haul after struggling with the strike zone. The Cardinals took complete advantage, winning Game 1, 9-1.
The Pirates placed rookie Gerrit Cole on the mound and he responded. The Pirates had Pedro Alvarez batting sixth and he responded. Two young players with bright futures in the Pirates' organization led the way in Game 2. They got the Pirates back in the series as Cole pitched six innings of one-run baseball, while Alvarez handled things on offense, hitting his second home run of the series and giving Cole room for error.
Game 3 saw a back and forth battle on Sunday. The Pirates started quickly, scoring two runs in the first inning of Joe Kelly. Kelly pitched great baseball, going 5.1 innings and allowing only those two earned runs. However, he threw a lot of pitchers after walking four hitters and striking out five.
Francisco Liriano had another dominant pitching performance, going six innings of three-hit baseball, allowing two earned runs while walking two and striking out five. Mark Melancon almost blew things in the eighth after surrendering a game-tying solo home run to Carlos Beltran, his second of the playoffs and 19th of his postseason career. However, it was Alvarez who got the Pirates back on top, driving in the go-ahead run in a two-run bottom of the eighth.
Who will win on Monday? Will the Cardinals' youngster Michael Wacha save their season or will veteran Charlie Morton be able to get a huge victory in a very painful career?
