Both rotations are deep and both managers have faith in their guys. The Oakland A's starting rotation is deeper than expected as they have shutdown thet Tigers' offense all season long. They have only surrendered six earned runs through the first two games of the series. When their pitching began to falter, the hitting took over in unexpected fashion. The A's smacked three home runs in Tuesday's victory, taking the 2-1 series lead from Anibal Sanchez and the Tigers.
On the mound today, the Tigers will trust Doug Fister to push for a Game 5 and the A's hope rookie Dan Straily can close the doors on the Tigers. A win today for Detroit means they stay alive for a Game 5, which also means they have their ace Max Scherzer take the mound in Oakland. The A's do not want to see Scherzer on the mound again in 2013.
Straily was durable in his first true season in the majors. The 24-year-old right-hander made 27 starts, posting a 10-8 record with a 3.96 ERA. His ERA is not impressive, but that did not play role in his only meeting against the Tigers in 2013. He went six innnings, allowing only one run in a blowout win for the A's.
Fister was, as MLB.com referred to the lanky righty, stingy at the beginning of the 2013 season. However, the Tigers were destroyed by A's the day Fister faced the green and yellow gang. It was Straily who opposed Fister that evening as the A's rallied past the Tigers, wiping the floor in Comerica Park 14-4. Fister surrendered seven earned runs against them in his last start of the month of August. Fister was able to rebound in September, closing with a strong month, going 3-2 with a 3.00 ERA.
The A's and Tigers hook up for a Game 4 Tuesday afternoon/evening, depends where you sit in the world. Do not miss the action as the young A's pitchers look to continue dominating at the major league level.
Could this be the year the A's finaly prove moneyball can win?
