In the past two seasons, quarterback Matt Flynn has earned $14.5 million for exactly one start in the NFL. After getting chances from both the Seattle Seahawks and the Oakland Raiders, Flynn has yet to prove he has the talent of a starting quarterback. After showing plenty of hope as a backup, Flynn time as a starter has led to a trade and a release. As he sits without a team once again, Flynn is hoping one team is still willing to take a chance on him.
The newly released Raider can already cross at least one team off the list of possible franchise interested in his talents. Flynn's career stared in Green Bay and there was thought the team might be willing to bring him back to once again be Aaron Rodger's backup. However, that appears to no longer be an option after Mike McCarthy denied any interest in Flynn.
"Personally, I'm very happy with the quarterback room, the way it looks, the people in it," McCarthy said, via ESPN.com. "Obviously Matt was a Packer, very fond of Matt and his time here. As far as any roster moves and things like that, I really don't have any comment on, but I do like Seneca Wallace. I like what he's done since he's been here. I feel very good about our quarterback room."
Flynn re-signing with Green Bay seemed like a logical option. The only flash of NFL success the quarterback had was with the Packers. He turned plenty of heads back in 2011 when he threw six touchdown passes for 480 yards in the team's regular season finale. That type of quick talent led to the Seahawks signing him following the 2011 season where he promptly lost the starting job to rookie Russell Wilson.
Green Bay has shuffled through backups since Flynn left. They have tried out everyone from Graham Harrell, B.J. Coleman and Vince Young in the preseason. They signed Seneca Wallace eventually to be the No. 2 guy. Flynn is likely a better option than Wallace, but McCarthy is not interested.
With Green Bay out, where could the quarterback land? At this point, the Jacksonville Jaguars seem like the best option. Blaine Gabbert is injured having felt something pop in his hamstring. This leaves the team with Chad Henne. Flynn is certainly an upgrade from both Gabbert and Henne, right? ESPN's Ed Werder believes the elbow tendonitis is playing a part in the lack of interest surrounding Flynn.
Flynn could be a decent quarterback in the right situation. Until then he will have plenty of time to ice that elbow and spend those millions until some calls his number.
