Justin Verlander and Sonny Gray meet up in what could be another memorable classic between these two pitchers. When looking at their Game 2 stats, it seems as though Verlander and Gray are making their first postseason starts of the year. However, after 15 innings of scoreless baseball pitch and no run support, both pitchers took home the no-decision as the A's eventually plated a run in the bottom of the ninth to win the game.
Gray went eight innings in Game 2, allowing four hits, walking two and striking out nine Tigers. Verlander, who was expected to probably easily outpitch the rookie, went seven innings, also allowing four hits, walking only one and striking out 11.
Verlander was dominant, which was amazing, granted, he struggled in 2013, giving way to Max Scherzer as this year's ace of the staff. However, Gray's performance, though it might be an anomaly, was increasingly surprising and amazing because he is just 22 years old. In his first season in the big leagues, Gray only pitched 64 innings, striking out 67 in 12 appearances this season. He started 10 games and finished with a 2.67 ERA and 5-3 record.
Verlander has been incredible against the A's in the ALDS. Last season, in two starts, he won two of the Tigers' three games in the ALDS, going a total of 16 innings, allowing seven hits and only one earned run with 22 strikeouts. Altogether, that adds up to a 0.56 ERA in those two playoff starts
