The Boston Red Sox have the home field advantage in the World Series after the American League won the All-Star game and now the team will face off against the St. Louis Cardinals at home at Fenway Park and they come in having won their last eight World Series matchups, sweeping both the Cardinals and the Rockies in 2004 and 2007.
The Red Sox and Cardinals have played three other times in the World Series, with the Red Sox winning in 2004 after losing in 1946 and then again in 1967 and that sweep in '04 obviously broke the long curse for the team and now they have a chance to add another championship in just under a decade. The teams are about as evenly matched as can be and they have storied histories going up against each other and in Game 1 it will be Jon Lester taking on Adam Wainwright in a battle of aces.
The Red Sox are coming in after sweeping the Colorado Rockies in four games in 2007 and that came after the 2004 series, which saw the Sox sweep the Cardinals after making their historic comeback against the Yankees. This is the first time in over 10 years that both teams are coming in with the best records in their respective leagues and that hasn't happened since the Yankees and Braves did it back in 1999.
According to ESPN.com, the Red Sox are second to the Yankees in win percentage in the postseason and the series sweeps has helped that. The Cardinals are third on that list and now both teams come in with 97 wins from the regular season. According to SI.com, the two teams are coming in with that many wins for just the sixth time after having the best records in baseball and funny enough, the only players left from the last series are Yadier Molina and David Ortiz. Should be an interesting series.
