Arsenal: RVP a massive influence, hope he stays: Alex

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would be devastated if club captain Robin Van Persie left Arsenal.

Oxlade-Chamberlain had a breakout year with the Gunners and credited Van Persie with being a massive influence in the dressing room.

"It's clear how important he has been for us with the goals he's scored," Oxlade-Chamberlain told The Sun. "He is one of the best strikers in the world."

"He is a massive presence in the dressing room. Helping all of us and speaking to the manager about what we are feeling, what we want and what we can do better.

"He even does the little things like arranging get-togethers with the players' wives and barbecues and fun days and golf days."

Securing the future of Van Persie has been the major concern for Arsenal this season, with the striker biding his time before making a decision. Van Persie, who scored 30 Premier League goals in the previous campaign, has just one year remaining in his contract and remains one of the most sought after players in the world.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, only 18 years old, values his club captain's advice. "He told me that when he first came to Arsenal it was quite similar to me, how the boss dipped him in and dipped him out.

"He would score a goal and then wouldn't play the next game, or he might score two and wouldn't get on in the next game or would play five minutes. He told me to keep working hard and to bide my time and to keep plugging away and my time will come.

"Before games he tells me to do this or that or to go here on a corner. He's a big leader. It will be good if he stays definitely. I don't know if he will, but I hope he does."

Oxlade-Chamberlain's impressive season with his club also earned him a call up to the England squad for Euro 2012.

"To get the call from the England manager was unbelievable. He (Roy Hodgson) told me I was being selected on merit and that he'd put me in the squad because he thought I could help the team.

"He said that he had seen me do well against AC Milan when I played in central midfield and that it was up to me to prove him right."

Meanwhile, even former captain Cesc Fabregas, who moved to Barcelona at the beginning of last season, hoped Van Persie would stay at the North London club. "As an Arsenal fan, I would be happy if he stayed in London to help Arsenal win titles."
