What's the only way the Cardinals' defense can make up for yesterday's loss? Scoring a ton of runs in Game 2 and tying the series at 1-1. Okay, they do not need a ton of runs, but it would be great for Cardinal fans to see that their team deserves to be here.
The only problem is that runs might be hard to come across in this game. John Lackey was stingy in his last start and Michael Wacha has been stingy all postseason long. The Cardinals have to capitalize in whatever mistakes, whether committed by the Red Sox's pitching or fielders.
St. Louis not only lost Game 1, but they possibly lost Carlos Beltran from their starting lineup as the right fielder banged into the short fence in right field. While tracking a long fly ball that appeared to be a home run off the bat of slugger David Ortiz, Beltran bruised his rib and was day-to-day for Game 2. With no Beltran in the outfield or in the lineup, the Cardinals are forced to play Matt Holliday, Jon Jay and Shane Robinson.
Robinson has been a force in the postseason. Mike Matheny made the right move in starting the 28-year-old outfielder. In his last three games, Robinson is hitting .444 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. He went 1-3 in yesterday's game, though that did not lead to a run. Robinson hit seventh in the order, but with Beltran out, the second spot in the order is open. Robinson has only struckout once in nine at bats this postseason. He is a contact hitter and stole five bases in 2013.
The Red Sox have been successful in 2013 because they have remained healthy, for the most part. They are healthy coming into Game 2, aside from Clay Buchholz who is being monitored as many wonder if the righty will be able to make his Game 3 start. The Red Sox will not have to worry about crossing that bridge until Saturday's game in St. Louis.
