World Series Results: Game 2 Sees Cardinals Win, Final Score and Summary Available

Oct 24, 2013 11:16 PM EDT

The 2013 World Series results saw the St. Louis Cardinals make this a series after defeating the Boston Red Sox in Game 2 by the final score of 4-2. The game saw great pitching from beginning to end, but ironicall, it was the Red Sox's defense that threw this game away, while the Cardinals' young pitching dominated the headlines.

Michael Wacha, Carlos Martinez and Trevor Rosenthal who are 22, 22 and 23 years of age, respectively, combined to shut down a Red Sox offense that scored eight runs in Game 1. Martinez threw two innings, allowing one hit while striking out two. Rosenthal struck out the side to end the game, closing out the deal in the ninth and picking up the save.

The Cardinals took advantage of the Red Sox's miscues in Game 2 of the World Series. In a game that was a pitchers' duel for six innings, the Red Sox's defense fell apart when their pitching needed them the most.

It took a bad seven inning for the Red Sox to lose a 2-1 lead. With the bases loaded, Matt Carpenter sent a sacrifice fly to left field. Jonny Gomes wound up and threw home, but Jarrod Saltalamacchia was in no position to make the play. Pete Kozma, who came in to pinch run scored as the ball got away from Saltalamacchia. Reliever Craig Breslow backed up the play, but he threw the ball away into the stands, automatically scoring Jon Jay.

Carlos Beltran, who was diagnosed with bruised right ribs before the game, singled to right field, scoring Daniel Descalso from third base. The Cardinals took a 4-2 lead and their bullpen went to work.

The Cardinals struck first in the fourth inning after manufacturing a run. Matt Holliday got a triple and with an out, he scored on a dribble up the middle as Yadier Molina drove in the first run of the game with a grounder.

It looked as though this would be enough for Michael Wacha as the 22-year-old was dealiung once again in the MLB playoffs. It was his first postseason start and he owned it, though he allowed two earned runs on a David Ortiz opposite-field home run. Wacha went six innings, allowing just three hits, striking out six, but walking four.

It looked as though the Red Sox would put this one away. However, the Cardinals got Wacha off the hook after he left the game down and the Red Sox leading 2-1. Lackey could not retire the Cardinals after being rewarded with the lead. He walked David Freese, which set off the Cardinals. Jon Jay followed with a single and that was it for Lackey. He finished the night with 6.1 innings pitched, allowing five hits while striking out six. He was charged three runs as the Red Sox were unable to help the cause.

Game 3 will see Jake Peavy take the mound in St. Louis as another youngster, Joe Kelly takes the mound for the Cardinals. Game 3 will be on Saturday.
