The Gold Glove is considered to be one of the best awards for a Major League Baseball Player to win, as it signifies a skill at their position over everyone else that plays it and this season the finalists were announced after Game 2 of the World Series and the winners will be revealed in a TV show on ESPN2 on Tuesday ahead of one of the championship games at 7:00 PM.
The gold Glove awards have been given out for years since back in 1957 and they are officially the American League and National League Rawlings Gold Glove Awards and this season there are a number of great finalists at each position, including some past multiple winners and winners from last season's awards. The Tampa Bay Rays have their entire infield of James Loney, Ben Zobrist, Evan Longoria and Yunel Escobar in the finals and another team that has a number of players up for awards is the Baltimore Orioles, as six players were nominated and this comes after the O's won multiple awards last season, including the second straight for catcher Matt Wieters.
The Orioles have Matt Wieters, J.J. Hardy and Adam Jones nominated for awards, while according to MLB.com, Yadier Molina will be going for his sixth Gold Glove award, which would put him up with some of the greatest players of all-time and he will go up against Russell Martin and AJ Ellis in the National League as he is playing in the World Series at home in St. Louis on Tuesday when it will be revealed.
The NL has some new names at various positions, including at pitcher, where Mark Buehrle won last season, while first base, third base and shortstop will all have new Gold Glovers. At first base Paul Goldschmidt will go up against Adrian Gonzalez and Anthony Rizzo, while at shortstop, it will be Andrelton Simmons against Tulo and Ian Desmond and lastly at third base, where it will be Nolan Arenado, Juan Uribe and David Wright.
Last year a number of players won their first awards while this season many of those players were not nominated. The MLB spread the wealth this time around and last season it was Jake Peavy and Jeremy Hellickson at pitcher with Buehrle, while Yadi and Wieters won it at catcher ahead of Mark Teixeira and Adam LaRoche at first base. Some of the other winners include Adrian Beltre, Adam Jones, Josh Reddick, Robinson Cano, Andrew McCutchen, Carlos Gonzalez and Jimmy Rollins.
The winners will be announced on ESPN2 on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
