The Washington Redskins have been in and out of the news way more than in past years due to their insensitive nickname and the way it is derogatory for Native Americans and while Snyder has ignored calls to change the name, there is speculation that he might be changing his tune, as TMZ reports hi neighbor has trademarked the name Washington Bravehearts.
The report is from TMZ, so take it with a grain of salt, but Deadspin.com reported on the story at the follow up, writing that Dan Snyder's neighbor is Aris Mardirossian, who the report states is wealthy and attended school with Snyder, applied for the trademark for the Bravehearts. Aris Mardirossian is the president of his business and he obviously is super wealth as well and the report adds that he also registered a business name for Washington Bravehearts, LLC, which claims to be used for "entertainment in the nature of football games".
While this is not hard and fast news and doesn't mean the name is changing, it is quite interesting no? The Redskins have been publically shamed by the President as well as Native Americans and while they continue to fight the name, they clearly are on the wrong side of history. While the Bravehearts is a very different name, it keeps it in the same ballpark and is way less offensive than the R-word. Yeah, I said it.
The TMZ report is just that --- a TMZ report --- but the fact that this is the man's neighbor and he is rich too makes it very interesting and while no one in the redskins will talk, it could mean the signs of change are coming.
And now, your starting quarterback...Robert Griffin III....of the...Washington...Bravehearts!
