MLB Playoff Standings: Red Sox a Win from Clinching Championship, Why Cardinals Can Win Game 6

Oct 29, 2013 12:02 AM EDT

The World Series Standings have a chance to see a winner on Wednesday in Game 6. The Boston Red Sox won Game 5, taking a 3-2 lead in the Fall Classic after winning the meeting by the final score of 3-1.

MLB Playoff Standings:
Game 1: Red Sox Win 8-1
Game 2: Cardinals Win 4-2
Game 3: Cardinals Win 5-4
Game 4: Red Sox Win 4-2
Game 5: Red Sox Win 3-1

These games have been close, but this one proved to be the game many expected to see in Game 1. Adam Wainwright was dealing and after the Cardinals tied the game, it looked as though it was anybody's game. In fact, the game was knotted 1-1 up until the seventh inning and the later it got, the greater the chances for the Cardinals to win the game.

However, similar to how they stripped homefield advantage right back. The Red Sox did not wait until the ninth inning to get some runs across the board. They struck with two runs in the top of the seventh as the guys who had slept all series long awakened when it mattered most.

Jacoby Ellsbury and David Ross each drove in a run. Ellsbury should have two RBI in this game, but the umpire missed a tough call at the plate as Ross slid around a tag from Yadier Molina. The ball beat Ross to the plate, but Molina had to stretch out and it looked as though he did not tag the Red Sox's catcher.

However, these two runs were enough as Jon Lester was able to match Wainwright pitch-by-pitch and once again beating the National League's second best pitcher in 2013. Lester is now 3-0 in his World Series career. The home run he gave up in the fourth inning to Matt Holliday was the first run he ever allowed in a World Series game.

The Cardinals lost their third straight game with Wainwright on the mound. For the second time this series, the Red Sox were able to score three runs off the ace, though the righty went deeper into this game.

Koji Uehara notched his second save of the World Series as he easily retired the Cardinals' batters without any drama.

Thanks to a combination of great hitting, defense and excellent pitching, the World Series Game 5 results saw the Red Sox take the second straight game at Busch Stadium. The World Series Standings now see the Red Sox just a victory away from clinching their eighth championship.

Questions Heading to Game 6
David Ortiz seemed to pull something as he was running down the line, beating out a ground ball to second base. However, because the trip shifts back to Boston, there is no down Big Papi will be back in the lineup this time as the DH.

Michael Wacha gets the ball for the Cardinals, but will the Red Sox give the ball to John Lackey? Will it be a starter by committee?

The Red Sox do not look like the favorite in this matchup as Wacka has won all four of his starts in the 2013 postseason. The kid is dynamic and he has been the true ace of the Cardinals' staff.
