The New York Jets just got beat down badly by the Cincinnati Bengals just a week after defeating the New England Patriots and with the team now at 4-4 through eight games and still in the playoff hunt, could they pull off a deal with the Cleveland Browns for wideout Josh Gordon for Santonio Holmes?
According to ESPN New York, probably not, as the Jets aren't exactly looking to blow things up right now, but the possibility of a deal is still out there. NFL.com writer Gil Brandt is a respected analyst and he says that the Jets and Browns actually fit well for a deal with each other, as the Browns would send Josh Gordon to the Jets for a second round pick. The addition of Santonio Holmes is just a possibility, but it would help the deal goo through most likely and Gordon would clearly take over as the best playmaker on offense for New York.
The Browns have said already that while they aren't actively shopping Brown, they have offers on the table and could send him to another team, with the 49ers looking like the most likely option right now. The news from the Jets has the team mostly staying put, but with the offense looking pretty terrible, adding a player like Gordon would open things up for Geno Smith and since he is a young player, the Jets could continue to develop Gordon into a deep threat and a scoring threat in their offense.
Last season Gordon was by far the best player on the Browns while making 50 catches for over 800 yards and he is already well on his way to besting those numbers this season. The Jets are ranked 22nd in the league in passing yards per game and on Sunday all they could get was field goals and with Smith still developing into a quarterback, this would be a way to add some prime talent to the team, something the Jets rarely did when Mark Sanchez was their QB. The deal would take a high pick and that is always tough to part with, but Gordon might be a player that's worth it due to his age and athletic ability.
This season Gordon has over 580 yards on 32 catches in six games, while Santonio Holmes has 10 catches this season while dealing with injuries. Holmes has 243 yards and he could be a solid option down the line for the Browns to move or to use to save money and they would position themselves even better in the draft after getting a first round pick from the Colts for Trent Richardson.
The deal likely is not going down, but it's something Jets fans seem to be looking for and with the team defeating the Patriots, the Jets might just have enough to get into a wild card spot that's in reach and adding a player like Gordon will only help with that. The Jets are a mess, which means a deal like this actually could happen and with the team at 4-4, there is just enough hope to go around on all sides.
