The NFL trade deadline is coming up at 4 pm on Tuesday and so far no large deals have gone through and while the Seattle Seahawks may be going after Jared Allen, one player that could move is Tennessee Titans receiver Kenny Britt and some options includes the New England Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers.
ESPN.com is reporting that Britt has said that he is open to a trade after falling out of favor with the Titans and mentioned that a new start could be a positive thing for him. Britt has plenty of talent, but he has off the field problems in the past and the 25-year-old has dropped a number of balls this season. Britt is also coming into the final year of his contract and that could be one reason why his name has been coming up in trade rumors. The team also has been happy with the way Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter have developed and that could mean a deal will be going down.
The Titans have not liked how Britt has handled himself while dealing with some off field situations and now he has just eight catches for under 70 yards this season in the final year of his deal. Britt said already that he felt the Titans were pulling what they did with Jared Cook this season, getting the finger pointed at him on the way out as a free agent and on top of that, he has been in and out of issues with police for his entire career, getting involved in nine different "incidents" since he was drafted. Britt has good size and ball skills and while he has 154 receptions for 2,421 yards in his career with nearly 20 TDs, the Titans appears ready to move him and the 49ers and Patriots both could be options since they are dealing with injuries to Danny Amendola and Michael Crabtree.
This season the Titans rank 25th in the league in passing yards per game and they are on a bye, with the St. Louis Rams coming up next Sunday. The team feels that getting something back for Britt could be worth it and NFL.com speculated that a deal with the Patriots could net them a draft pick and that could be enough to make it happen. The Pats have some young stars in Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson, but with Amendola hurting, they may want to add some more depth with Britt.
The Patriots, apart from Aaron Hernandez, have often been able to work with troubled players, ie Corey Dillion, Randy Moss, Aqib Talib and others, making Britt not too big of a risk. Britt has put up solid numbers for a player his age and while he has not been very good this season, he could help with a playoff push for a team and in his career he showed some great potential, including last season when he played in 14 games and had 45 catches for 589 yards. Britt has made over 40 receptions in three of his five seasons with the Titans, but now things clearly have turned for the worse and he likely will not be back with the team even if he remains with them past the deadline.
