Nelson Cruz is a free agent and the Texas Rangers might be considering resigning their right fielder. MLB free agent rumors have it that the Rangers might extend Cruz. How much and for how long? More important, will it be worth if for Cruz who is currently seeking a big payment.
Rumors have the Rangers, who had another disastrous end to their 2013 season, offering Cruz a one-year deal worth $14.1 million. The Rangers clearly need production and Cruz was their man in 2013. Before the 50-game suspension, the Rangers were in control in the A.L. West. As time went on though, it became clear they could not compete against an Oakland Athletics team that was roaring in August and September.
Consequently, not only did the Rangers fall out of favor in the West, but they also lost their lead in the A.L. Wild Card race as the Tampa Bay Rays also made a run at the end of the season.
Cruz was the heart and soul of the Rangers' offense. Before his suspension, he was the battery at the middle of the lineup. He was targeting a career high in home runs and RBI. Back in 2009, when he blew onto the baseball scene, Cruz hit 33 home runs and last season, he drove in 90 runs. In 2013, he had 27 home runs and 76 RBI by Aug. 4. Cruz was then suspended and was able to play in the A.L. Wild Card game, which the Rangers eventually lost.
Cruz played 159 games in 2012, proving he could be an everyday presence. However, it was his healthiest season as the outfielder has been played with hamstring issues throughout his career. Prior to the 2012 season, from 2009-2011, when Cruz became an everyday player, he averaged 120 games a season.
Should he take the $14.1 million for one year?
It seems like that will be the most money Cruz could see in a year. However, he could be exposed. What if he is unable to perform and stay healthy, especially after the PED's consumed? He could be exposed and his paycheck could see a considerable deduction. For career reasons, it seems like a better idea to dismiss the $14.1 million deal. Chances are Cruz could get at least a three or five-year deal somewhere else. Five years is pushing it, but three years just north of $30 millions seems appropriate.
Cruz is not only a solid addition to any lineup, but he is a postseason monster. In 34 games played, Cruz has 14 home runs and 27 RBI. Like David Ortiz, he seems to play better when the lights are brighter. Of course, Ortiz is a hero in Boston and has never been caught consuming PED's.
