Rory McIlroy Shoots 80 At PGA Championship, Misses Cut In Second Straight Tournament

Rory McIlroy is looking like anything but the top player in the world.

The reigning U.S. Open champ imploded in his second round of the BMW PGA Championship on Friday. He made seven bogeys and two double bogeys on his way to shooting a 7-over 79 and missing the cut. At one point, he dropped seven shots in just six holes. This follows his poor performance in the opening round on Thursday, where he shot a 74 and a one point threw his club in frustration.

The poor outing continued the struggles for the 23-year-old. It is the second consecutive tournament in which he has missed the cut. The No. 1 player in the world is likely to lose his top spot in the world rankings, possibly to Luke Donald, who is No. 2 on the list and currently tied in second place in the tournament.

McIlroy has not been immune to surprisingly bad rounds. In last year's Masters, he shot a round of 80 on the final day after leading the field for three rounds. It was the worst round by any professional golfer who was leading after three days. He finished in fifteenth place.

James Morrison leads the field by four strokes. The PGA Championship concludes this weekend.
