The move was expected. After Aaron Rodgers went down with fractured collarbone, fans knew the Green Bay Packers were going to have to explore other options at the quarterback position. Currently, Seneca Wallace and now Scott Tolzien occupy the roster spots at the position. While Wallace will get the start on Sunday, the Packers are bringing in Matt Flynn for a workout.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that Flynn will be brought in for a workout likely after Week 10's game. Flynn started the year as the potential starting quarterback for the Oakland Raiders. He was released in favor of Terrelle Pryor, only actually starting one game for the team. He was then picked up by the Buffalo Bills in wake of EJ Manuel's knee injury. He did not play a snap for the team and was then released after the rookie was concerned healthy enough to play. Flynn has cleared waivers and can be signed by anyone at any point.
Bringing Flynn in honestly makes the most sense, even over starting Wallace. The quarterback has had his greatest success playing under Rodgers in the Green Bay system. He played backup to Rodgers for years resulting in hype that was apparently unwarranted. However, Flynn knows the Packers' offense, he knows the facilities and if Green Bay needs more depth on their roster, he is the best player to consider.
The hit against Flynn, besides his lack of success as a starter, is his health. There are reports that Flynn suffers from tendonitis to his throwing arm. If he can show enough strength in his workout, Flynn will likely get signed after his workout. Will he play? That all depends on Wallace.
Mike McCarthy and teammates are expressing full confidence in Wallace as a starting quarterback for the team. Rodgers will be out the next 4-6 weeks meaning Wallace really has to step up and be consistent as Green Bay enters a close race for the postseason. Wallace certainly has the years of experience to step up and start. He was the guy in Seattle for a few seasons. Some were better than others.
Flynn might not get passed the workout if Wallace can play well on Sunday. Stepping in for Rodgers on Monday night, he put up 114 yards going 11 for 19 in passing. Flynn's future depends on his success.
