A.J. Burnett is a free agent after the Pittsburgh Pirates refused to offer the right-handed veteran a qualifying offer just a few days ago. With the market open and starting pitching being sought after, Burnett could find himself playing for a year or two in the league. Where could he go? No rumors have started, but these are some teams who could use the right-hander's services.
Atlanta Braves
Immediately, just for drama's sake, the Braves come to mind. Remember when Burnett left a deal on the table in Atlanta because the Yankees offered him more money? If the Braves offer a one-year deal, would the right-hander take it?
Of course, Burnett might be a couple of bucks beyond the Braves' budget. His qualifying offer would have been $14.1 million. After the organization made horrible deals for Derek Lowe, Dan Uggla and B.J. Upton, there is little doubt that a $14-15 million price tag for one season would not be something the Braves would truly consider.
However, the Braves want a veteran guy in their rotation. Their pitching rotation is great, but it is young and lacks experience, which is one of the reasons why the Braves will not win a championship within the next five years.
Cincinnati Reds
This guy knows the N.L. Central division, so why not go for it? Bronson Arroyo is no longer around to anchor the staff and give the team innings, so why not go after a veteran who has experience in the big leagues and has pitched well against the division? The Reds were fifth in strikeouts and Burnett would only help add to that total.
New York Mets
Just like the Braves, the Mets could use an anchor. Burnett knows the city of New York having played with the Yankees. However, things in Queens are more relaxed and there is less pressure to perform. The Mets, again like the Braves, would not succumb to the price tag, but they could use his veteran leadership in their clubhouse and pitching rotation.
Next year, by default, Jonathon Niese and the youngster Zach Wheeler will be the team's ace. Of course, other, cheaper veterans will be available as rumors have it that the Mets will land Roy Halladay.
Other possibilities based on pitching need: San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies
Preferably, Burnett would remain in the N.L. He has posted better numbers in the N.L. although he won his only championship in the A.L. with the Yankees.
