Green Bay Packers Rumors: Matt Flynn Signs As Backup For Aaron Rodgers Injury, Team Works Out NFL Free Agent John Skelton With Scott Tolzien Starting

The Green Bay Packers are in nightmare mode with the injury to Aaron Rodgers and the team is looking at adding some depth to the position behind backups Seneca Wallace and Scott Tolzien, as the team has signed former backup Matt Flynn and they are also looking to sign John Skelton as a free agent.

According to CBS Sports, the team is signing Flynn after he was previously with the team and he was cut by the Buffalo Bills and the Oakland Raiders and while he is dealing with an elbow issue, the Packers felt it was a good idea to sign him. The report says that the team is also looking to sign John Skelton and that may be due to Flynn's elbow injury and the fact that backup Seneca Wallace was injured, leaving Scott Tolzien as the main backup and now the starter. Rodgers left the game against the Chicago Bears with a collarbone injury and Wallace was injured on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, leaving Tolzien to be the starter against the New York Giants.

Flynn left the Packers after having one amazing start as a free agent with 480 yards and six touchdowns and then he signed with the Seahawks before getting beaten out by Russell Wilson, after which he was traded to the Raiders. While in Oakland he was beaten out again and now he will get another chance in Green Bay. The Packers previously worked out Flynn after Tolzien went 24-38 against the Eagles with 280 yards and now the team adds some insurance and depth at the position, including with Flynn and Skelton. Rodgers is expected to continue to be out for at least a month and it could be longer and with backup Seneca Wallace getting injured, Packers coach Mike McCarthy knew the team needed to make some moves.

Flynn had his chance in Buffalo, but that came to an end and he is a solid fit in Green Bay after spending years there in the past, the team seems content to tray and stave things off until Rodgers returns. Wallace played in the game against the Bears after Rodgers was injured and looked okay and eventually he was injured against the Philadelphia Eagles the following week, thrusting Tolzien into the lineup. Wallace had just 114 yards passing against the Bears and now the Packers will figure out what to do down the back stretch of the season.

The team has some tough games ahead, with the New York Giants coming before the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions in crucial division games and then the team will have to see where Rodgers is in his recovery. The team plays against the Atlanta Falcons later and then on the road against the Dallas Cowboys before playing the Steelers and then the team will be on the road against the Chicago Bears to finish the season and that game could have big divisional implications. The Packers have a tight division now with the Bears and the Lions and losing Rodgers could end up turning the tide for the Lions and puts the Packers in a very tough position.
