The New York Mets were obvious about two things last season; acquiring outfielders and having interests in getting rid of first baseman Ike Davis. Now, there is proof of how close the Mets came to trade Davis in 2013 as a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers was in the works. Why did the deal get pulled back?
Concrete evidence is not available detailing who the Mets wanted from the Brewers, but sources are certain that the Brewers will not dare move their 31-year-old outfielder, Norichika. It is likely the Mets would have tried to get Aoki since he would provided great numbers in 2013. He has a solid bat (.288 avg.), possesses the ability to get on base (.355 OBP) and has some pop for a little man (10 HR, 5' 9", 175 LBS).
Why would the Mets want to trade Davis?
After hitting 32 home runs and driving in 90 RBI in 2012, nothing was the same. He had showed signs of being prone to strikeouts as the young first baseman only hit .227 while punching out 141 times in 2012. This past season, the Mets were rumored to having interests in trading Davis. His power was gone and he only played 103 games. He hit nine home runs with 33 RBI. He was on base 33 percent of the time, but the Mets needed Davis to protect David Wright in the lineup.
New York Daily News' Andy Martino suggested that the Mets might have a chance to make a deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies or the Tampa Bay Rays as they are seeking young first basemen. The Rockies might like Davis' ability to hit home runs and Davis might like the thin airs of Colorado. Perfect fit?
