The MLB season is complete and after Clint Hurdle and Terry Francona won manager of the year awards, next is the Cy Young on Wednesday and after that is the MVP awards on Thursday and heading into that announcement, there are a number of candidates that deserves consideration, including Miguel Cabrera, Clayton Kershaw, Mike Trout and Max Scherzer.
The Cy Young favorites are Kershaw and Scherzer, while the AL MVP will likely come down to Trout and Cabrera again like it did last season. The NL MVP is interesting and it likely will be Andrew McCutchen after he led the Pirates to the playoffs this past season for the first time in 20 years.
The Major League Baseball season is now over and with the Boston Red Sox now sitting as World Series champs after defeating the St. Louis Cardinals, it's time to take a look at the possible award winners this season and some names for MVP and the Cy Young includes Miguel Cabrera, Clayton Kershaw, Mike Trout and Max Scherzer.
Last year when Cabrera won the Triple Crown, it was down to him and Mike Trout for the American League MVP and it appears to be going that way again, as Cabrera had another fantastic season and so did Trout. Amazingly, Cabrera put up some better numbers than last year and while he limped to the finish while he was injured, he ended up hitting .345 this season with 44 home runs and 137 RBIs and he also scored over 100 runs last season.
The Tigers made the playoffs and that always helps, but Trout had himself a great season once again and voters may want to reward him for the past two after deferring to Cabrera in 2012. The battle should be another good one again and while Trout hit .327, with 27home runs and 97 RBIs, it might not be enough to overtake Cabrera. Other players that deserve consideration includes Chris Davis, Max Scherzer, Robinson Cano as well as David Ortiz, but the battle once again should come down to Cabrera and Trout.
The National League is a bit easier, but that depends on who you ask. Andrew McCutchen likely will be a top candidate after helping the Pirate make the playoffs, while Paul Goldschmidt deserves some consideration as well after the great season he had. McCutchen played excellent defense and played in 155 games and hit over .315 with 20 home runs and 83 RBIs and the fact that he helped the Pirates snap their playoff streak should play a big factor in the voting. Some other players that should get votes includes Goldschmidt, Matt Carpenter, Clayton Kershaw as well as Joey Votto.
The Cy Young awards seem pretty clear cut and it's not close. Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer should and likely will win these awards, as they were far and away the best in their respective leagues. Scherzer won over 20 games and only lost three and with his ERA under 3.00 and his strikeout numbers, it's clear he should win. Hisashi Iwakuma should get a vote, but only because he had a great season and has no chance to win. Kershaw only won 15 games, ("only" lol), but he had a 1.88 ERA and over 220 strikeouts and he likely will win it.
