The Florida State Seminoles and quarterback Jameis Winston have been having a magical season in 2013, but that quickly turned a bit sour as news broke that the redshirt freshman is being looked at in connection with a sexual assault case from nearly one year ago.
ESPN.com is reporting that Winston is part of an "ongoing investigation" into a sexual assault complaint and case that was filed back in December and the attorney for the QB states that police contacted him back in February and that no charges were filed. Adding to that, Winston was never interviewed by police and that brings up question is as to why this came out now, possibly the reason being that Florida State and Winston are having a successful season. The report says that William Meggs, state attorney for the Second Judicial Circuit in Tallahassee, mentioned that the office got the report on Wednesday and Winston's lawyer said that he hopes to have the issue resolved quickly.
The school released a statement about the situation and did not add any comments and the original report was from back in December. The report included an "alleged" sexual battery incident and the report described the person involved as 5-foot-9 to 5-11, which is interesting, as Winston is 6-4 and clearly a big dude. The team is undefeated this season and Winston is having a great season and now this could add some distractions as the team tries to finish undefeated for a possible showdown with Alabama in the national title game.
This season Winston has 2,661 yards and 26 touchdowns and is directing the second ranked scoring offense in the nation. The team is ranked 14th in passing yards per game and they now are playing Syracuse and Idaho before finishing the season on the road against the Florida Gators before the ACC championship.
"We are aware of a matter that was investigated by the Tallahassee Police Department almost a year ago," the school said in a statement. "Because the investigation has not been closed by TPD, we cannot comment further at this time. We look forward to a speedy resolution of the issue. There is no change in Jameis Winston's status."
