When Ed Reed was released by the Houston Texans, many believed his time in the NFL was over. After numerous injuries and a rough start to the 2013 season, it seemed unlikely that any team would call the safety to join on the remainder of the season. He cleared waivers without any interest from teams, but just a day later, Reed signed with the New York Jets. Now, the safety is admitting that more teams called than originally reported.
While everyone was predicting that Reed's career in the NFL was over, plenty of teams were calling the safety's phone expressing interest. Prior to signing with the New York Jets, both the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins called showing interest.
"I don't think either one of them wanted me in their conference," Reed said, via NJ.com.
Interest from the Patriots comes as no surprise. Head coach Bill Belichick has said numerous times that he believes Reed is one of the best defensive players in the league and has admired his style of play for many years. Once Reed became a free agent, it seemed likely Belichick would take the chance to finally coach Reed. On the other hand, interest from the Dolphins seems extremely odd. The team has other things to worry about rather signing a big-time safety.
Now with the Jets, Reed is reunited with his former coordinator, Rex Ryan. The safety has certainly heard the criticism surrounding him as many question whether or not he still has gas left in the tank. Reed is ready to prove people wrong.
"I don't think I'd be here if they [the Jets] didn't think that," Reed said. "I know what I know. I know what I feel and I know what I put into my offseason workout. When you critique me, you've got to critique everybody. But it seems that Ed Reed is held to a higher standard - and I created that monster. I've been blessed to create that monster. I love it. I'm all for it."
Ryan admitted that signing Reed had nothing to do with sentiment. He truly believes that Reed can do wonders for the team and their pursuit of making the playoffs behind a rookie quarterback. Ryan backed Reed's statement that he still has plenty of football left to play, confident that the safety can remain an elite player.
Reed will get the chance to prove that soon. Ryan confirmed that while Reed may not be ready to start, he will see plenty of playing time against the Buffalo Bills this week.
