Hakeem Nicks has not exactly had the season he was hoping for. In a crucial contract year, the New York Giants star has yet to record a touchdown through 11 weeks. While his team may be on a four-game win streak, Nicks' season struggles continue. After another quiet game against the Green Bay Packers, Nicks showed a rare display of emotions in a heated sideline outburst.
Nicks essentially removed himself from the game on Sunday. At the time, the wide receiver had just two pass thrown his way which both fell for an incompletion. With just 4:37 left in the first half, Nicks took himself out as Louis Murphy replaced him and caused an Eli Manning interception. While Nicks will not exactly say why he left the game, a heated exchange between he and running back Brandon Jacobs showed the star was clearly not happy with himself.
Nicks displayed a rare showing of emotion after Jacobs came over to give what appeared to be a pep talk. The two then had a yelling match that Nicks stresses was simply about football and not an indication of a broken locker room.
"Oh yeah," Nicks said, via the New York Daily News. "It wasn't serious. We were just talking about football. I think we were talking about the opportunity, my opportunities come far between so I like taking advantage of every opportunity. I was just getting on myself a little bit."
Jacobs confirmed that the discussion was merely him expressing concern for Nicks as his season continues to remain patchy at best. Both he and fellow running back Andre Brown went over to try and instill some confidence and inspiration back into Nicks.
"I love him like a brother," Jacobs said. "I want to see him do as best as he possibly can. Regardless of what the issue was I'm here to give him confidence and inspire him as a teammate the best way I possibly can. Hakeem is a beast, man. Everybody knows Hakeem is a monster out there. Everybody goes through their ups and downs. We're football players and we are human and that's what happens. But Hakeem is a monster. Not for one day, not one minute, not one hour or one second am I worried about him not performing."
Nicks finished the day with four catches for 50 yards. He continues to sit in second place on the receiving chart for the Giants despite the fact that Rueben Randle has six touchdowns on the year to the zero scores Nicks has put up.
