With Jay Z as an agent, anything is possible for Robinson Cano. The New York Yankees second baseman is likely one of the most watched free agents this offseason and his Roc Nation Sports reps are going to make sure he gets his money, no matter where he is playing. Reportedly very involved in the entire process, Jay Z held a private meeting with some team officials that signify Cano could be changing out of his pinstripes but not leaving New York.
The New York Post is reporting that Jay Z met Mets COO Jeff Wilpon and general manager Sandy Alderson along with officials and agents for dinner to discuss their possible interest in Cano. The meeting is interesting considering Alderson already said the Mets could not afford to take on another player with such a large contract. David Wright is already signed to a nine-figure deal, leaving little room for the size contract Cano will deman.
The Yankees offered a seven-year, $161 million contract and Cano demanded a 10-year, #310 million deal. Sources tell ESPN that the free agent has no plans on backing down from that asking price. So could he end up over in Flushing? The Mets are a long shot to land Cano, but Jay Z will push it. New York already has Daniel Murphy at second base, but it is likely he would not be the hurdle in the Cano signing. The team could easily trade him.
The Yankees still remain a strong option for the free agent. The Post reports the team is remaining very interested in Cano despite the difference in opinion on contract size. Since free agency began, the two sides have not met extensively about contracts, mainly because the Yankees are a little busy with the Alex Rodriguez situation, holding everything up for the team. Rodriguez's uncertain status could influence how much money the team can offer Cano depending on whether or not his contract is wiped off the books.
The Post reports that Cano will likely wait until after winter meetings to sign with a team. Free agents like Shin-Soo Choo and Jacoby Ellsbury will likely sign deals first, making it more clear who the true suitors for Cano really are.
