Michael Vick gets it. The Philadelphia Eagles must continue to go with the hot hand each Sunday. That means that Nick Foles remains the starting quarterback and Michael Vick sits out. While Chip Kelly is not about to endorse someone as the future starter for the Eagles doing forward, Vick is putting his total faith in Foles no matter what his health status is.
The numbers certainly do not lie. Foles is the better option and Vick is aware. The quarterback has started five games this season, tossing 16 touchdown passes, completing 63.6 percent of his trows for 1,554 yards. In comparison, Vick has started six games, tossing five touchdown passes, completing just 54.6 percent of his passes for 1,215 yards. Vick sees the writing on the wall.
"In all honesty, in all fairness, how can you take a guy out of the game who's been playing so well?" Vick said, via CSN Philly. "I've been in this stage before, and I know what it's like. I understand the position that this team is in, and the one thing I never want to do is be a distraction or put our team or our coaches in a position where they feel like they're not doing the right thing or I feel like they're not doing the right thing. I trust what's going on, I enjoy being a part of it, I love the game of football in general. So it's important to me to be there in support and be ready if my name and number is called again."
Vick understands that his time as a starter for the Eagles could possibly be coming to an end. Foles is producing wins which is enough to keep him under center each week. Vick has been out with a hamstring injury that will not go away. Working off a one-year contract, he understands the future is muddy.
"He had an opportunity to learn from me this year and last year and just sit behind me and pick my brain, and he also went out and played the game, and now he's just taking that and everything is unfolding for him," Vick said. "He's going out there and everything he's worked for and put into his game, he's it putting to work, and that's what you've seen. He can potentially be a starter in this league for a long time. It's just about timing, as of right now. As long as he keeps doing what he's doing, he's going to continue to build that case."
The Eagles are on a three-game win streak as they enter their bye week. While Foles has the blessing of Vick, he has yet to earn it from Chip Kelly. However, the head coach could have Tom Brady as his quarterback and he would still "evaluate" the position each week.
