It is a new season for the New York Jets, but old issues might be revisited as Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis may threaten to sit out from training camp following contract disputes with the team.
While being interviewed in the locker room, Revis could not guarantee that he will be joining the team in training camp. He said, "I'm getting ready for the season," multiple times without elaborating.
He then repeated, "Like I just said, I'm getting ready for this year, and that's all I'm focused on is getting ready for this year. Whatever happens in the future happens. That's all I can tell you right now."
In 2010 Revis sat out of training camp for the same reason. He had his best season in 2009, intercepting six passes on 31 passes defended. He is considered the most feared corner in the NFL.
The Jets and Revis agreed on a four-year contract, $46 million contract. Most of the money came in the first two years of the deal. $32.5 million for the first two years, but only $13.5 in the following two.
Ironically, Revis missed three games in the 2010 season due to a hamstring injury. He came back in 2011 with four interceptions, running them back for a total of 184 yards, a career high.
The only games he has missed in his career were the three in 2010. Aside from that, he has played in every regular season Jets game since joining the team in 2007.
The Jets have already attracted a lot of headlines after signing Tim Tebow, the last thing the team needs is for another distraction. If the Jets are not going to pay then they should get rid of him. If they are going to pay, then handle business as quickly as possible so the team can focus and start the season on the right foot.
No Rex Ryan puns intended.
