The New York Yankees continued their spending spree this winter after signing Brian McCann as their new catcher and on the same day they announced the signing, the team snagged another prized free agent in Jacoby Ellsbury, as they signed him to a seven year deal worth $153 million.
According to ESPN.com, the team signed Ellsbury and all they need to do is finish things up with a physical and it will be set. The news was first reported by CBS Sports and now the Yankees have signed two of the biggest free agents on the market and Ellsbury will help replace Curtis Granderson in the outfield and he now has the bigger contract compared to Carl Crawford, who signed a $142 million deal a few years ago.
Ellsbury was one of the top free agents on the market and he joins the Yankees after winning the World Series with the Boston Red Sox. This deal comes as the Yankees are working on whether to sign Robinson Cano and this move could help soften the blow if it eventually happens. The Yankees are positioning themselves to rebound after missing the playoffs last season and having both Ellsbury and McCann on the roster adds some big upgrades at two important positions.
Ellsbury brings speed to the Yankees, as he had over 50 stolen bases last season and he also had nine home runs with 53 RBIs while also hitting nearly .300 and it comes a couple years after a huge season with 32 homes runs and 105 RBIs and he also hit .321 that season and while he was injured last season, Ellsbury should have a huge impact on the Yankees.
