It is safe to say that MLB agent Scott Boras is not attending any Jay Z concerts in the near future. The two have gone back and forth with subtle digs ever since the rapper announced he was becoming a certified sports agent and branching Roc Nation into the sports business world. Jay Z took things one step further by stealing slugger Robinson Cano out of Boras' grasp. After earning the second baseman a marquee contract with the Seattle Mariners, Boras had some not-so-nice things to say.
Cano was one of the biggest free agents this offseason. He opted to depart the New York Yankees for a 10-year, $240 million contract in Seattle. Cano was one of Boras' star clients, but he decided to leave the agent in favor of Jay Z and Roc Nation sports. Now the rapper is getting the credit for negotiating the big contract for the second baseman, but Boras believes Jay Z had nothing to do with it.
"It's very different to be the creator of the umbrella versus those who stand under it," Boras said, via ESPN.com. "When you're bringing the prettiest girl to the prom, you don't really pay attention to who he's dancing with, unless it's a very unusual step."
Boras believes the talent of Cano is what got him the deal, not the fact that Jay Z was a skilled agent who negotiated the contract. Boras also took another dig at the rapper saying it was the surrounding agents that helped land the deal for Cano after laying in the groundwork. Jay Z just showed up at the last minute to sign the papers.
Boras may or may not have a point, but the reality is Cano wanted a deal north of $200 million and it appeared no team was going to offer that. The Yankees were only putting up seven years and $160 million, unwilling to budge from that number. Jay Z flew out to Seattle and suddenly Cano is getting a 10-year deal and more money. Who else could take the credit? Many believe Jay Z actually pulled a move inspired by Boras and got Seattle to big against themselves.
Boras is never one to shy away from speaking his mind, especially after someone else got the best of him. His comments certainly do not shine Jay Z in the best light, so hopefully another diss track emerges from the rapper. "Crown" certainly got the ball rolling in the first place.
