The Miami Heat are continuing their dominance in the NBA sitting 16-6 which outs them in second place right behind the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference. While the team is putting up wins right now, there is some concern about whether it will continue down the road as injuries begin to set in for players. Dwyane Wade has been trying to pace himself and his troubled knees, but his lack of playing time has the Miami Heat seeking a trade.
According the New York Daily News, The Miami Heat is targeting Celtics' Jordan Crawford to help add depth behind Wade. Miami is looking to deal for a younger wing player to take some of the load off Wade and Crawford appears to be the best option. He is helping the inconsistent Celtics with 23.3 points per game on 61 percent shooting. He is also averaging 6.7 assists per game.
Crawford's contract would make the trade a one-season deal. He is set to become a restricted free agent next year with a qualifying off a $3.2 million. However, the Heat are preparing to set the futures for Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh making any other long-term salary a non-priority. The Celtics could deal Crawford as a way to set up for their assumed rebuilding. Crawford is playing well enough to hurt the team's chances at lottery picks for 2014 since Boston currently sits on top of the Atlantic Division.
The Heat need Crawford. Last season, Mike Miller was the primary substitute for Wade, but Miami opted to not retain him in order to save salary cap space. Head coach Erik Spoelstra has been trying anything to get a rotation without the All-Star. Ray Allen has seen time as a starter. James Jones and Rodger Mason Jr. have taken a stab at the spot, but so far nothing has really worked out.
The Heat have reportedly been putting Joel Anthony up for a potential trade package. The team stocked up on big men in the offseason. As players like Greg Oden start to develop and see playing time, Anthony might not be needed. The 31-year has a favorable trade contract. As the things start to heat up on the trade market, Miami could be looking to pull this deal off.
