French Open: Defending Champion Li Na Crashes Out; Rafael Nadal in Cruise Control

Defending champion Li Na's title defense came to a premature end with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 defeat by Yaroslava Shvedova in the fourth round.

On a cool and windy day, Li found it hard to cope with 142-ranked Kazakh, racking up 42 errors on her way to the three-set loss.

Maria Sharapova also had to battle the conditions and Klara Zakopalova, eventually eking out a 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2 win.

American Varvara Lepchenko's run came to an end after going down to Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 6-2, 6-1.

"I will take some days off to totally forget tennis and then try to come back next week," said Li.

"I have to find the reason why I lose the match. I will find out, but not today," added the Chinese, who has not won a single title since her triumph in Roland Garros last year.

Sharapova was involved in a three-hour battle, where according to her own admission, all game plans went out of the window. "She played extremely well - she's a dangerous player," the Russian said.

"I'm useless with game plans. That's probably the one thing coach (Thomas Hogstedt) just gets so frustrated with me about. I go out there and I do my own thing, and then he's like, after the match, 'Really? What's the point? I mean, what's the point of having me?' But I apologized when I hired him, in advance, so he's okay."

Rafael Nadal had no problems with the weather whatsoever, breezing past Juan Monaco 6-2, 6-0, 6-0. "I feel really comfortable, really at ease," said Nadal, who will face Nicolas Almagro in the quarterfinals.

"When the tournament is over, I'll tell you if this was my best Roland Garros or not. For the time being, I'm still playing. So far, so good, but we'll see. Things could change."

Andy Murray recovered from an awful first set to take out home hope Richard Gasquet in the fourth round. Murray won 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2.

"Obviously they were not ideal conditions. It's a little bit stiff but it's much better than it was a few days ago," Murray said.

"I played some good tennis. It was a bit like when I played against (Jarkko) Nieminen and I was moving very well at the end of the match. Hopefully the conditions will warm up a little bit in the next few days."

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, David Ferrer and Juan Martin Del Potro also made it into the quarters.
