Dec 26, 2013 12:11 PM EST

After some very strong play Liverpool now sits in first place on the English Premier League table on Boxing Day and heading into the back end of the holiday schedule, the club will play against Manchester City at Etihad Stadium in a battle of top teams in the standings and the match will be on the NBC Sports Network and streaming online starting up at 12:30 pm after all the Boxing Day action in the EPL.

Liverpool came into the day leading Arsenal on the table by goals scored with the two teams having the same amount of points at 36, while Manchester City has 35 points with 11 wins and one less draw and after that on the table are Chelsea and Everton in the fourth and fifth positions ahead of Newcastle United, Tottenham and Manchester United, who are in sixth place after winning over Hull City on Thursday. Liverpool has been playing very well as they are moving up the table and they came into the match on Thursday after a win against Cardiff City last weekend and Luis Suarez has continued to play very well for the Reds, as he had two goals in the match and continues to lead the EPL in goals scored. The Reds have the chance to keep their lead with a win and a solid performance on Thursday against Man City, but that will not be easy and then the team has some tough matches ahead, including Chelsea on December 29.

Suarez has kept the team winning and winning big over the past couple weeks and he continues to lead the EPL in scoring after putting in two goals against Cardiff and he had 19 goals after that match and Raheem Sterling added the other goal for the Reds in that match. Before that, Liverpool won big over Tottenham in the match that lost Andre Villas-Boas his job and that 5-0 loss saw another two goals from Suarez in the match and Sterling also scored in that shutout and now Tim Sherwood is locked in as the manager for the season.

The Reds have been playing without Steven Gerrard and that is why Suarez was named captain for the match before and he has been out since early December after getting injured against West Ham in the 4-1 victory and he was ruled out six weeks and now he is getting closer to coming back. Gerrard likely will not be in the lineup for the FA Cup match, as the Premier League is more important and he could be back in the lineup against Stoke City and Aston Villa for two away games and he should be a lock to come back in the home match after those if he can't get fit enough to get into the lineup. Gerrard scored his 100th league goal earlier in the season and Suarez has been great in his absence.
