Giants Sign Coughlin Through 2014

The anticipation is over as the New York Giants have signed coach Tom Coughlin to an extension that will keep him in New York through 2014.

Coach Coughlin was unsure about his situation as a head coach for the Giants. He was signed through the end of the 2012 season, but had not heard about the Giants plans to extend him.

After talks during the regular season of firing Coughlin, saying he had lost his touch with players and had softened up as a coach, he guided the team to their second Super Bowl in five years.

It would have been foolish not signing Coughlin after a tough, well-played season by the New York Giants. They battled through injuries and a tough schedule. Finishing the season 9-7, enough to win the division and get them into the playoffs.

Once in the playoffs and the odds against them, they steamed through the toughest teams in the NFL. They beat the Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers.

This set up a rematch between the Giants and the New Englad Patriots and they went on to win Super Bowl XLVI, 21-17. The victory made Coughlin the older coach, at 65 years of age, to win a Super Bowl.

There is no doubt that Coughlin is one of the best coaches in the NFL and possibly NFL history.

Coughlin has proven he is a winner totaling 142 wins in his 16-year career as a coach. He has a total of 12 wins in the playoffs. His 154 overall wins tie him 17th all-time in victories for coaches.

Coughlin is also the second longest tenured coach in the franchise's history. He will be coaching his 9th straight season with the team. Behind only Hall of Fame coach Steve Owen, who ran the team for 24 years.

The Giants have not finished with a losing record in six out of the eight years with Coughlin as their coach.

In 2012-2013 the Giants will look to repeat as champions. They have Eli Manning, one of the best quarterbacks in the league and Victory Cruz, who had a breakout 2011-2012 campaign.
