The New York Yankees were gifted with the news that Alex Rodriguez would be suspended for the entire 2014 MLB season and that means some money will be freed up for the team to spend and it also means they need a new 3B, which is why names like San Diego Padres players Chase Headley and Logan Forsythe have come up in recent trade rumors.
The Yankees had previously been mentioned as a possible destination for Headley when the A-Rod suspension was up in the air, but since then the Padres have softened their stance on trading him. According to Hardball Talk, the Yankees and Padres have been in contact about a move and while Headley is the likely name, the report says that young prospect Logan Forsythe could also be the subject of talks. The report posits that the Yankees could use a platoon with Kelly Johnson at the position since Forsythe hits well against lefties and that could be a temporary move for the Yankees.
Forsythe is still young at 27, while Headley is coming into the season after having a down year in 2013. Forsythe played in 75 games and hit .214 with six home runs and 19 RBIs to go along with six stolen bases and he could be an option after playing in various positions last season, including at second base and at third, two places the Yankees have holes.
The Yankees are also battling for Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka and now it looks like the team will be battling with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels to get the pitcher. According to the Sporting News, those are the only three places that he is interesting in signing and it comes after he went 24-0 last season with a 1.27 ERA in Japan. The Dodgers have reportedly said they will not be outbid for the star, while the Yankees now have some more money to spend.
