Spain reigns supreme. As the defending European Champions begin their attempt to repeat, they stand atop the FIFA world rankings.
FIFA's latest standing, released this week, have Spain ranked No.1. Following them is Uruguay at No. 2, then Germany and the Netherlands. Brazil and England each moved up one spot to five and six respectively. Rounding out the top 10 are, in order, Argentina, Croatia, Denmark and Portugal.
The United States gained one spot to move to No. 28. The top team in the CONCACAF region, which consists of North America, the Caribbean and Central America, is Mexico at No. 19.
Ivory Coast leads African nations at No. 16. Japan is now Asia's best, rising seven spots to No. 23. Australia is No. 24.
The rankings will surely be shaken up after the month of June. The European championships begin on Friday with the final taking place on July 1. Spain is in Group C along with Italy, Croatia and the Republic of Ireland. They open play on Sunday against Italy.
Group A consists of Poland, Greece, Russia and the Czech Republic. Group B, considered the group of death, includes four of the top 10 teams in the world: the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany and Portugal. Rounding out the tournament in Group D is France, England, Ukraine and Sweden.
