Darrelle Revis is really saying what everyone is thinking, Greg Schiano was a big problem in Tampa Bay. Despite the lack of on-the-field success, the number of issues off the field that headline the Buccaneers' 2013 season all had the head coach as the center piece. After Schiano was fired from Tampa Bay, the cornerback is speaking out over the negative tension the head coach brought on.
Revis' unhappiness with Schiano was first reported back in Week 2 of the season. The cornerback was growing irritated with the coach's defensive scheme and unwillingness to work to the strengths of his players. He claimed the head coach was too strict during practice and players simply hated working for him. All of that led to a 4-12 season and the firing of Schiano, something that did not shock Revis.
"The atmosphere, I felt like, was real tense," Revis said, via the Tamp Bay Times. "Guys didn't like coming to work. That's one of the things you have to have, a stress-free atmosphere and environment. You're going to get everything out of everybody if it's stress-free and let people be who they are. I just didn't feel he did a very good job of that. It was a learning experience for him as well, and hopefully, if he ever gets another stab at it, he'll do things differently."
Revis believes Schiano was simply too inexperienced with defensive schemes to understand how to truly coach an NFL team. He also believed that the coach's inability to listen to the players was his major downfall. According to Revis, a number of players would make suggestions of different plays and Schiano never took them into consideration.
"There's a difference between being a head coach and in control of the whole team and the whole organization at the time," Revis said. "Everybody's got their own schemes and what they bring to the table. I wish he would have listened to some of the players a little bit more, especially the veterans and some of the older guys. We can go down the line like Dashon Goldson, Davin Joseph, Carl Nicks, Vincent Jackson and those type of guys and listen to them. But he was the boss, and you've got to fall in line."
After health issues in team facilities and reported blackmailing of players, many believed Schiano would not get another NFL job for a few years. However, as the Cleveland Browns get desperate in their coaching search, Schiano has officially been put on the books for an interview. NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Schiano is expected to interview as the team narrows their choices down. It was reportedly Bill Belichick that recommended the idea.
One person out of the running is Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. The two parties have spoken, but he is not expected to get hired or even be interviewed for the position.
