Kirk Cousins could be one of the most in demand quarterbacks this offseason, or he could not be. The Washington Redskins backup has reportedly requested a trade to team in hopes of becoming a starting quarterback, but the Redskins are not confirming whether or not he is available. Due to the uncertainty, the Cleveland Browns are setting their sights on a different plan when it comes to the quarterback position.
The Browns hired Kyle Shanahan as their new offensive coordinator, a trade for Cousins seemed like the most likely option. The second-year pro has had mild success as a starter in place for the often-injured Robert Griffin III. He started the final three games of the season after the starter was benched. He completed 53 percent of his passes for 747 yards and four touchdowns. Considering how bad the Redskins looked last season that was considered very impressive.
However, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Browns are not considering making a trade for Cousins, instead setting their sights on the NFL Draft to find a new potential franchise quarterback. Owner Jimmy Haslam likes what he sees in the incoming class of rookies and will hope to trade up and get the best quarterback available.
The idea of drafting over trading could come because of Brian Hoyer. The quarterback showed mild success at the position before getting injured. The Browns like the idea of having him start while developing a rookie behind him.
Cleveland has already spoken very highly of Johnny Manziel as Haslam stated he would do "whatever it takes" to get the former Texas A&M star. The Browns currently hold two first-round picks and are expected to trade one. Could that be for Cousins? It seems like a good idea, but does not appear to be the path Cleveland intends on taking.
According to Cleveland.com, the Browns are feeling the pressure to bring in a "playmaker" aka Manziel. The quarterback is projected to be the No. 1 overall pick. Giving up a first round pick to the Texans in exchange for drafting first will certainly qualify as making a splash.
Cousins might not be available at all despite all of the trade rumors. Griffin is not a guarantee to play every game in a season and Cousins is a successful backup option. While he may prefer to be something more, Washington will determine if that happens or not.
