England hung on to 1-1 draw with France despite not generating many opportunities and being fairly well outplayed in the match. It was the opening match for both clubs in the 2012 European Championship in a group that also includes Ukraine and Sweden.
England got on the board first on a goal from Joleon Lescott in the 30th minute. After James Milner was taken down by Patrice Evra near the sideline, Steven Gerrard placed a perfect free-kick in front of the French goal, which was headed in by Lescott.
The lead did not last long, however. Just nine minutes later, France's Samir Nasri laced a shot from the top of the box into the near side of the goal to tie the game. England was late on closing out on Nasri and keeper Joe Hart appeared to be screened on the play and was late reacting.
Although France, which is expected to advance out of the group, could not get another goal, they dominated much of the action. France controlled the ball 65 percent of the match and, according to UEFA, completed 299 passes to England's 171 by halftime. After full time, the numbers were 634 to 307.
England was rarely a threat after going up 1-0. They played well back in defense and had few scoring opportunities. In fact, their best chance outside of their goal, came earlier when Milner took an Ashely Young pass, got around French goalie Hugo Lloris, only to miss an open net. England clearly missed striker Wayne Rooney, who was suspended for the match.
Group D's second round matches will take play on Friday as France will play Ukraine while England takes on Sweden.
