Jake Ballard Cut by New York Giants

Jun 11, 2012 04:48 PM EDT

The New York Giants have parted ways with their tightend Jake Ballard.

He injured his ACL in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLVI and has been unable to recover.

Ballard failed a physical on Monday and was immediately placed on waivers for any team to claim. If nobody claims him, the Giants could place the young tightend on injured reserve.

Ballard had been productive with the Giants in 2011. He was third in the team with 604 receiving yards, fourth in both receptions (38) and touchdowns (4).

Giant fans, as well as New England Patriot fans, will remember Ballard for catching the touchdown pass that beat the Pats in Week 9 as time was running out.

He became the fillin for Kevin Boss who signed with the Oakland Raiders before the 2011 season.

For now it looks like 25-year old Travis Beckum will get a chance to be the everyday starter. Beckum has had opportunities in the past, but has not been consistent.

Last season he caught five receptions totaling 93 yards with a touchdown. 67 of these yards came in a highlight catch that opened the Giants' matchup against the Green Bay Packers in a regular season game that the Giants almost walked away with a win.

The Giants are praying they can get wide receiver Hakeem Nicks healthy by the beginning of this season.

Look for Eli Manning to prove his elite-ness this season as he has a limited amount of proven players available as targets.
