The NFL draft is still months away and after the combine some players are rising and falling and one interesting prospect to watch is Tajh Boyd, who could fit as a backup QB in the NFL and some experts have him going to teams like the Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings or Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their mocks.
Boyd came into the season with high expectations at Clemson and while things did not end up great following a bad loss to Florida State, Boyd still put together a solid year and now he is looking to move to the NFL. According to ESPN.com, Boyd did not impress at the combine and that is one reason why many feel that he is heading towards a backup job in the league if he gets drafted. Boyd is not among the top names in Johnny Manziel, Blake Bortles and Teddy Bridgewater and he has not been grouped in with the second tier either in AJ McCarron, Derek Carr and David Fales.
ESPN.com blogger David Newton wrote about Boyd in regards to the draft and he mentioned the Carolina Panthers as a potential landing spot, as the team has yet to truly develop a backup quarterback for Cam Newton. The Panthers have been fortunate that Newton has been able to start every game for the team over the past three seasons and for the most part he has played every snap in those 49 games and he has put together a 25-23 mark, third best among QBs that have started all the games for their team over the past three seasons.
Newton writes that Carolina should be in the mix for someone behind Newton and that Boyd could be a potential option, as he is slipping a bit and could be had in the later rounds of the draft. Newton writes that the team has picked Tony Pike and Jimmy Clausen as the only QBs other than Newton since 2006 and he compares the move to what the Seahawks did with Russell Wilson and that clearly worked out well. The team doesn't need a Wilson like the Seahawks did, but adding someone behind Newton could be a smart move.
