While Kris Medlen, Mike Minor and Julio Teheran are guaranteed starters, there are questions regarding the remaining two spots. As the team takes the field against the Boston Red Sox on Friday, Alex Wood is hoping to cement his position as the fourth or fifth man.
Wood is just a year removed from a solid college career. After catching the attention of both Tim Hudson and Mike Minor, the Atlanta Braves are considering him as a potential ace for the rotation. The 23-year-old put up a 1.26 ERA in 10 stars with Double-A Mississippi. He then got called up to start in the bull pen after Eric O'Flaherty got injured. He took advantage of the opportunity and impressed everyone.
The issue with Wood's future as a starter could be his delivery. The pitcher is inconsistent with his throwing and his arm motion could lead to injuries down the road. Wood's mechanics have come under question as many scouts think he can be successful, but not for long.
The Red Sox will Felix Doubront to the mound for his second start of spring training. The Red Sox are feeling very good about their entire lineup this season despite not returning key members of last year's championship team. The champs survived a rocky outing against the Miami Marlins where they left 12 runners stranded, but prospect Allen Webster made a strong argument for a starting spot as the pitcher held the team to just two hits and no runs.
Boston looks to be in contract for another championship run this upcoming season as the Braves are hoping to celebrating at some point as well.
