The NY Jets are in the market for a quarterback and names like Josh McCown and Josh Freeman have come up as targets for teams like the Houston Texans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns and New York would rather sign a veteran than trade for someone like Ryan Mallet or Kirk Cousins during free agency.
The Jets are coming in with some money to spend and they have over $35 million to play with and there is a good chance they will add some skill position players like Golden Tate or Rashad Jennings, while they also are reportedly looking to sign a veteran quarterback to compete with or start over Geno Smith. According to ESPN.com, Josh McCown has generated interest from the Jets and he is also a target for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Houston Texans and he has said that he wants a real chance to start this coming season after playing well for the Bears last year. McCown made the Bears have to think for a second about Jay Cutler's injury with the way he has been playing and now he is looking to start this season.
McCown is one of the best options left on the market after Chad Henne and Matt Cassel signed back with their teams and he sits with Michael Vick and Josh Freeman as the free agent options on the market. Pro Football Talk is reporting that McCown has already spoken with four teams about signing and the 34-year-old likely will pick a place where he will have the chance to start. Last season McCown put up nearly 2,000 yards with 13 touchdowns and just one interception and he is looking for a contract based on how he played.
The Jets saved money by cutting Santonio Holmes and Antonio Cromartie and now they have some room to work with and names like Alterraun Verner and Hakeem Nicks could be in the mix. Michael Vick has been mentioned as a potential quarterback to bring in, while the team could look to release Sanchez soon, as he is due a bonus at the end of the month. The Texans are in the market for a quarterback and since they have the number one pick in the draft, they could take a player there or wait and bring on a veteran now.
Sanchez is likely getting cut and the Jets will need a veteran to work with Smith and McCown or Josh Freeman could be that option. The team likely will not look into a trade for Kirk Cousins or Ryan Mallett, while the Texans could look into the latter due to the Bill O'Brien connection. All these teams need significant upgrades and McCown likely will get a starting look wherever he ends up signing.
