The Dallas Cowboys have an opening at backup quarterback and Tim Tebow could be an option for the team over Kyle Orton if the QB doesn't return and other names the team may target includes Jason Campbell, Brandon Weeden, David Carr, Jon Kitna and Matt Flynn along with John Skelton, Tyler Thigpen and Mike Kafka heading into the draft and spring offseason.
Tebow would be a wild option for the team and it is very unlikely to happen, but Jerry Jones loves a good show and even though Tebow is working on TV now, he could change his mind if he finds a decent offer. Tebow has not had much attention since he was released by the Patriots last season and apart from a small sniff from the Rams that didn't amount to anything after Sam Bradford was injured, it appears that no one really wants him.
Tebow would be a project quarterback even with his improvements and if no one in the league is looking at him, it's unlikely the Cowboys will. But never count out Jerry Jones. The names the team has looked at in Mike Kafka, David Carr, Tyler Thigpen, Richard Bartel and John Skelton are nothing special and would Tebow really be worse than those dudes? The team could use him in better ways than the Jets did and apart from Tebow, the Cowboys could look at some other names, including recently released quarterbacks in Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell along with free agents like David Carr and Matt Flynn.
The team doesn't have much cap space and they have never put much money in the backup QB position, but with what happened to Tony Romo last year, it could be a good idea to get someone in that is ready to take over if he gets hurt once again. Kyle Orton was solid enough coming in last year, but he couldn't get it done and there is a chance that the team could look to draft a quarterback instead in the draft in May.
The class this year is deep at the position and names like Derek Carr, Logan Thomas, AJ McCarron, Zach Mettenberger and Arron Murray as well as David Fales and Jimmy Garoppolo could be fits to develop behind Romo. While the team signed Romo to a big extension, he is getting past his 30s now and having a rookie behind him to develop like the Giants did with Ryan Nassib may not be the worst thing in the world for the Cowboys. And come on, Tebow time would be a blast in Jerry's World.
At quarterback Weeden and Campbell could be solid options to bring in after being cut by the Browns, as they shouldn't cost too much and in no way will challenge Romo to start and won't have fans calling for it either. The Cowboys haven't done much in free agency so far and they have lost DeMarcus Ware to the Denver Broncos and now they are looking at picking up defensive end Robert Ayers, who previously played in Denver.
