The Atlanta Falcons have made defense a top priority in free agency. The team has signed a number of players to give them depth after injuries depleted the unit last season. The Falcons have already signed players like Tyson Jackson and Paul Soliai to help with issues, but Atlanta is still seeking a primary pass rusher in either free agency or the NFL Draft.
Right now, the Falcons have Osi Umenyiora penciled in as a pass rusher, but only if he accepts taking a pay cut. Umenyiora certainly did not have a bad year in 2013, but he obviously not the same defensive threat he once was. There is a chance the veteran could be released sooner rather than later. Depending on the stance the Falcons take with Umenyiora, they could go after a free agent for help before shifting their focuses to the NFL Draft.
According to Cover32, former Dallas Cowboys star Anthony Spencer could be a solid fit for the Falcons. Spencer went on a visit to the New York Giants, but left without a contract. Atlanta could easily step in and swoop him up after missing out on players like DeMarcus Ware. Spencer is worth a solid deal. The Cowboys suffered without him last year, allowing 6,645 yards in total. He has the skillset to either put his hand in the dirt or stand up. He can rotate as a defensive end or an outside linebacker which fits with Atlanta's fluid defense.
Spencer would be a boost to the Falcons defense. He would also be an upgrade from someone like Umenyiora. However, if Spencer opts to sign with the Giants, Jared Allen could still be a solid option for the Falcons. Allen fits more of the mold of Umenyiora. He is not as versatile as Spencer, but can still put up numbers in sacks, the main priority for Atlanta. Allen has been hot and cold on the free agent market. He has taken visits with teams, but has not signed a contract yet. Atlanta has salary cap space to use and could win Allen over with a better contract.
No matter what, the Falcons will draft someone that can be a pass rusher. Atlanta is a favorite to trade up this year and try and get Jadeveon Clowney with possibly the No. 2 pick if they can work out a deal. If not, a player like Khalil Mack could be a target. The Falcons could then shift around their line with other free agent signings. So far Atlanta have made all the necessary moves with free agency just a week old. Expect the team to do even more before the draft.
