New York Yankees vs. Washington Nationals: A Streak Will End Tonight

Jun 15, 2012 11:37 AM EDT

The New York Yankees and the Washington Nationals will lock up in a three-game series.

Both teams have won six straight games and are playing great baseball. It seems like they collaborated to defeat each other's rivals in the beginning of the week.

The Yankees swept the Atlanta Braves and the Nationals were able to sweep the Toronto Blue Jays

After tonight however, a streak will end.

The Nationals hold the edge in the pitching matchup, as they have Gio Gonzalez on the mound.

Gonzalez is having a ridiculous season in his first year with the Nationals. Batters are hitting a league low .178, he is eighth in the majors in ERA and seventh in strikeouts.

However, he will face a Phil Hughes that has had quality starts in three out of his last four games. In his last start, he beat the Mets after throwing 6 1/3 innings and only giving up two earned runs.

In his prior start, Hughes beat 2012 Cy Young and MVP Justin Verlander. He threw a complete game and only gave up one run.

The Yankees hitters did not look great against the Braves, but they managed to get big hits in big situations.

Alex Rodriguez hit a grand slam in the eighth to tie the game at four and the Yankees won the second game of the series 6-4. Then in the last game, Curtis Granderson hit the game-winning two run bomb that gave the Yanks a 3-2 victory.

The Yankees will have David Robertson back in their bullpen. He will set up the eighth inning for the now closer, Rafael Soriano.

Speaking of bullpens, the Nationals have had a tough time finding a regular closer, but their bullpen has found a way to win. They are second in the majors with 23 saves as a team.

The Yankees will need to get runs whenever they have runners on as the Nationals' have the best ERA as a pitching rotation.

The Yankees will face rookie phenom Bryce Harper for the first time.

Currently, Harper is on an 11-game tear. He has hit .381 over the stretch with three homeruns and an on-base percentage of .458.

These two teams have two of the three top winning percentages. Is it possible that we are getting a preview of a World Series matchup?

October is still months away, but baseball fans should keep an eye on the results of this series.
