The Pittsburgh Steelers have some major holes to fill on offense in the offseason. While the team has no issues at the quarterback, the team has lost two of their top wide receivers in free agency and still needs upgrades at the running back position if they are going to compete next season. With no other options besides rookies or veterans, Ben Roethlisberger is not thrilled over the state of the roster.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Roethlisberger was not happy when both Emmanuel Sanders and Jerricho Cotchery were not re-signed with the team. Without those two, the Steelers are left with Markus Wheaton, a former second-round to step up and No. 1 receiver last season, Antonio Brown, to pick up where he left off.
Roethlisberger was especially unhappy when Cotchery failed to return. The veteran was the team's tallest receiver. As of now, Pittsburgh has no replacement for his 6-1 frame and have not brought in too many options in the second week of free agency. With plenty of teams making moves to sign what is left, the Steelers could be forced to rely on rookies for help.
Pittsburgh is reportedly interested in Lance Moore for the slot position. The former Saints star put up 457 yards last season, but had 1,041 yards the year before. Moore has generated some interest on the market, but not enough to rush Pittsburgh into a signing. However, the veteran would add quality depth and be a strong presence for Roethlisberger.
Replacing Sanders is not tough since Brown is returning. But Cotchery was a strong asset over the past few seasons. He had 602 yards last year along with 10 touchdowns, a team high. The Post-Gazette reports that Roethlisberger pleaded with coaches to re-sign Cotchery and keep him from heading elsewhere, but that failed to work out.
As far as the free agent market goes, there are some strong remaining options. The team could try and sign Kenny Britt who is expected to be under contract by the end of the weekend. Miles Austin and Santonio would come fairly cheap since both players have had injury history. However, Pittsburgh looks more inclined to target the draft for help.
NFL Network suggests Kelvin Benjamin for the Steelers. The 6-foot-5 star from Florida State would certainly solve the team's height issues. He would be a huge red zone target for the quarterback after he hauled in 15 touchdowns last year. Odell Beckham could be another big receiver the team looks at. The LSU standout could go in the first round, leaving the Steelers to make some decisions.
