Stony Brook Makes First College World Series Appearance Today

Jun 15, 2012 12:51 PM EDT

With the College World Series taking off today at 5 PM EDT, the Stony Brook Seawolves will make an unexpected trip to college baseball's highest stage.

They will face off against the UCLA Bruins, who have been to the College World Series four times.

The Seawolves come into the CWS as the underdog since they have never played this far into the season, but they had the most wins in the nation.

They went 53-12 and had seven players picked in the 2012 draft.

Travis Jankowski is the highest pick ever out of Stony Brook, going 44th overall in the draft to San Diego. He raked, hitting .422 leading the way as Stony came second in the nation with a .335 hitting average.

William Carmona was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies after hitting 12 homeruns and coming in fourth in the nation with a .702 slugging percentage.

The Bruins are 47-14 in the season. UCLA has six players hitting over .300 and are led by Jeff Gelalich who is hitting .364 with 11 home runs.

The other six teams in the CWS are Arizona and Florida State. They face off later on tonight at 9PM.

Ketucky State will face Arkansas and South Carolina will play against Florida tomorrow.

Whoever loses two, will be eliminated. If teams finish with identical record there are extra games scheduled to break the tie.
