The Minnesota Vikings are aware they cannot get by with just Adrian Peterson in the backfield. While Peterson is the focal point of the Vikings' offensive attack, he simply cannot do it all by himself. The team relied on backup Toby Gerhart several times over the last few seasons and with the Jacksonville Jaguars signing him in free agency, could Chris Johnson be an option?
There is no question Peterson will be the starter for the Vikings next season along with being a big peice of the overall team plan. However, who will rotate in and out when Peterson needs rest? Peterson put up another 1,000 yard season last season with 10 touchdowns averaging 4.5 yards per carry. He did have some hamstring issues last year that limited him and with some questionable talent backing him up right now, The Vikings need to make a move.
According to ESPN.com, Johnson could find himself heading to Minnesota. The running back was released by the Tennessee Titans on Friday and according to NFL sources has plenty of interest surrounding him. Johnson is not the running back who once rushed for 2,000 yards, similar to Peterson, but he could be a great second option for Minnesota.
ESPN goes on to report that what could hinder this move is a long-time rivalry between the two running backs. It seems unlikely that Johnson will be willing to come in as merely a backup to a player he once was compared heavily to. His salary would be that of a backup as well while Peterson gets paid big money like Johnson used to.
The Vikings do need another running back given the uncertainly surrounding their quarterback play. Johnson would be a great fit skill wise but maybe not with his attitude. If Minnesota does not make a move on him, teams like the Dallas Cowboys or the New York Jets might give him a deal.
Johnson will have to be willing to humble himself some during free agency. No team is going to pay him like a super star. At this point, any interested team only needs a backup and not a starter. Johnson might be a rotational player at best, but will only get offered a backup's contract.
