The No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft appears to be more sought after than the No. 1 overall pick. While many teams assume the Houston Texans have every intention of using their top draft pick, the St. Louis Rams looked primed to make a trade. Already setup well in several key positions, the Rams do not necessarily need to draft that high and are getting plenty of calls asking for a price tag. General manager Les Snead is ready to answer the phones.
The Rams have two first-round draft picks because they were so kind to trade down last season so the Redskins could grab Robert Griffin III. Locked and loaded for a very productive draft this season, the Rams have the pieces in place that make trading down again a very favorable option. The team has a starting quarterback in Sam Bradford. The have a left tackle in Jake Long, so getting Greg Robinson is not necessary. The need a wide receiver, but this year is deep in the position. They could draft Jadeveon Clowney, but they already have one of the league's best pass rushers in Robert Quinn. So why use the No. 2 pick when trading down could get them so much more.
"We have had some conversations with multiple teams," Snead said, via theMMQB.com. "They're more flirtatious calls than anything. We have numbers 2 and 13, but Houston has No. 1. Nobody can really seriously chat with us until they are happy with at least two players. I think what might happen as we get closer to the draft, maybe it comes to fruition what Houston is going to do, maybe it doesn't, you have more serious talks probably the week of the draft going, 'Hey, if our player is there at 2, this is what we're going to offer.' I think it will get more serious."
So which teams is Snead flirting with? That all likely depends on what the Houston Texans do. If the Texans go by the book and draft Johnny Manziel, the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars are fighting for that No. 2 pick. Both teams have expressed interest in the pass rusher and interest in trading up. If the Texans draft Clowney, then the Raiders, Browns and Vikings are likely calling about moving up for the quarterback.
The Rams have a lot of power with the No. 2 pick. The team needs a wide receiver, but if they stay in the top ten, they could easily grab Mike Evans and possibly Sammy Watkins if they are lucky. Negotiations will likely continue until May gets here.
